A Look into the Animation Process
Have you ever wondered what goes into making the animations for your favorite games? In this behind-the-scenes look, we'll take you through the process of how Senior Animator Ben Cherwinka animated a rare inspect animation for the all-new Cobalt Katar Apex Artifact in Apex Legends.
The first step in the animation process is to gather references. Cherwinka looked at real-world references of knifes being inspected, as well as other animations in the game for inspiration.
Once he had enough references, Cherwinka began to create the animation. He started by blocking out the key poses of the animation, which are the most important points in the movement. Once the key poses were in place, he began to fill in the details and create the in-between frames.
The entire animation process took Cherwinka about a week to complete. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and he is excited to see players use the inspect animation in-game.
